For churches, Christmas is a strategic time for outreach to the community. People may be more open to discussing God than at other time of the year! Yet it can be hard to go beyond the shepherds and the manger to address the deeper truths of Christmas. After all, the Almighty wrapped in flesh; God living and dying on earth to save us from ourselves—those are difficult truths to comprehend.
That’s why Drama by George developed Christmas Presence. This contemporary Nativity play is firmly rooted in the Gospel narratives, but also re-imagines the very human events of Christ’s birth as though they happened in the twenty-first century!
In the play, Joseph and Mary attend their senior prom on the same night that an angel named "Gabe" tells Mary that she'll bear a child. Later, members of a motorcycle gang stand in for the traditional shepherds, and a foreign ambassador brings gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn king. All the while, Mary and Joseph struggle to come to grips with their son's unique identity.
